A new study indicates the potential benefits of marijuana for treating patients who suffer from fibromyalgia, according to Marijuana Moment.
The research was published in the Journal of Alternative Complementary and Integrative Medicine. It was based on three patients in Portugal who used an 18-percent THC cannabis flower product, the only commercially available medical cannabis product in Portugal.
The authors of the study found that the marijuana was helpful in treating pain and other symptoms related to fibromyalgia, with all three patients reporting benefits that included pain relief, improved sleep and better quality of life. Two of the patients also said that use of the marijuana enabled them to cut back on other medications they were taking.
According to the researchers, “cannabinoids treatment showed promising results in the management of chronic pain and other FM [fibromyalgia]-associated symptoms, improving the quality of life of these patients.” But due to the limited scope of the study, they said further research was needed in this area.
Two of the three patients said that during the cannabis treatment they no longer had insomnia, while the third saw their formerly severe clinical insomnia lowered to “subthreshold insomnia.”
A 2018 report from the Netherlands also determined that chronic pain patients suffering from fibromyalgia can benefit from marijuana but that the pain relieving effects differed significantly depending on products’ concentrations of THC and CBD.
