Michigan Reports Over $3 billion in Sales of Cannabis Products in 2023
LANSING, MI – Michigan reported strong results for sales of cannabis products in 2023, according to the Cannabis Business Times.
The Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency said that the state’s licensed marijuana dispensaries sold $3.06 billion in adult-use and medical products last year, an increase of 33.3% from 2022. The total comes to approximately $305 worth of cannabis products per person in the state, which is the highest per capita rate of spending in the United States.
The 2023 figures were capped off by $279.9 million in total sales for December, a jump from $260.5 the previous month. Adult-use sales of marijuana were approved by Michigan voters in 2018, and recreational marijuana sales began in the state in December 2019. Since that time, retailers have posted nearly $8.2 billion in cannabis sales.
The only other state with over $3 billion in annual cannabis sales is California, which recorded over $4.4 billion in sales in 2023. But Michigan’s annual per capita spend on adult-use cannabis was over twice that of California last year.
While adult-use cannabis sales came to over 97% of the annual market in Michigan in 2023, medical sales dropped 68%.
