TALLAHASEE, FL – With Election Day approaching, a new poll demonstrates the continuing level of support for an amendment legalizing marijuana in Florida.
Florida Politics reports the survey from the University of North Florida’s (UNF) Public Opinion Research Lab (PORL) found 66% of voters backing Amendment 3. The constitutional amendment requires at least 60% of the votes cast in November’s election in order to pass.
If the measure is approved, companies which already grow and sell medical marijuana would be allowed to sell it to adults over 21 for any reason. The possession and purchase of up to 3 ounces of marijuana and up to five grams of cannabis concentrates for personal use would be legalized, and a regulated framework would be created for commercial cannabis production and sales.
“After years of polling on marijuana in Florida, both medical and recreational, it is clear that the majority is in favor of legalization,” said Dr. Michael Binder, PORL faculty director at UNF. “Closing in on election day, despite some heavy campaigning, we’re seeing support for this amendment and is on track to exceed the 60% supermajority required to pass.”
30% of those surveyed plan to vote against Amendment 3. Just 4% of voters haven’t already made up their mind on the measure. The previous poll, taken in July, indicated that 64% of voters would support the measure.
More than 1 million Florida voters signed petitions in support of the recreational marijuana initiative that was led by the group Smart & Safe Florida. Over 71% of the state’s voters approved the use of medical marijuana in 2016.
“This poll is another welcome reminder that Amendment 3 is expansively supported and widely seen as the best path forward for Florida,” said Morgan Hill, spokesperson for Smart & Safe Florida
