Polls Find Support For Measure Legalizing Recreational Marijuana In Florida

New polling shows substantial support for a ballot measure that would legalize recreational marijuana in Florida, Forbes reports.

If the measure is approved, companies which already grow and sell medical marijuana would be allowed to sell it to adults over 21 for any reason. The possession and purchase of up to 3 ounces of marijuana and up to five grams of cannabis concentrates for personal use would be legalized, and a regulated framework would be created for commercial cannabis production and sales.

According to Florida Politics, a recent survey indicates that more than 64% of Florida likely voters support Amendment 3, the legalization measure. The constitutional amendment requires at least 60% of the votes cast in November’s election in order to pass.  Previous polls had indicated the amendment remained short of the 60% mark.  100% of respondents aged 18 to 29 saying they would vote in favor of Amendment 3.

The poll was conducted among 1,065 respondents from June 26–June 29 with a reported margin of error of 2.9%.

Another poll, conducted last month by Fox News, showed 66% of Florida voters supporting Amendment 3, including 76% of Democrats, 71% of independent voters and 57% of Republicans.

More than 1 million Florida voters signed petitions in support of the recreational marijuana initiative that was led by the group Smart & Safe Florida. Over 71% of the state’s voters approved the use of medical marijuana in 2016.

Smart & Safe Florida is celebrating July as Freedom Month and is running an ad campaign to support Amendment 3.

“Throughout the month of July, our campaign will remind voters that freedom means individual rights and an end to arrests and incarceration for simple marijuana possession charges,” said Smart & Safe Florida spokesperson Morgan Hill. “We know that thousands of people are arrested every year in Florida for marijuana. When Americans across the country have the right to choose to consume marijuana, it’s a disgrace that Floridians’ individual freedoms are still restricted.”
