Sales Of Recreational Marijuana Set To Begin This Week In Ohio

COLUMBUS, OH – Consumers in Ohio are about to get their first opportunity to purchase recreational marijuana, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

The state’s Division of Cannabis Control (DCC) began notifying marijuana dispensaries that they can begin recreational sales on Tuesday after receiving certificates of operation.

Over the past several weeks, the DCC has been issuing dozens of the state’s first dual certificates of operation for marijuana growers, processors and testing labs so they can begin working with both medical and recreational marijuana.

Ohio voters approved a measure legalizing marijuana that went into effect last December. Medical dispensaries began applying for dual licenses to sell cannabis products to adult, non-medical customers.  When they receive a certificate of operation, they will be permitted to sell recreational products.

Under the legalization measure, adults 21 and over are permitted to buy and possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis and to grow up to six plants per individual or 12 plants per household at home. The state was given nine months to create a framework where consumers could purchase marijuana legally, subject to a 10% tax.

Before beginning sales on Tuesday, dispensaries were notified that they would need to update their information in the state’s tracking system and tell local officials they intend to begin sales.

Applications for dual licenses began in June, and the state must approve or deny them by Sept. 7.

“I feel honored to be part of this historic event,” said Brian Wingfield, owner of Ohio Cannabis Company. “I’m looking forward to serving all Ohioans medical and recreational.”

“We are stepping into a new future for Ohio where citizens will have access to safe products and communities will feel the benefits of this growing industry through tax revenue and job opportunities,” said Tom Haren, spokesman for the Ohio Cannabis Coalition.

At least two dozen dispensaries said they were planning to open Tuesday, with another 129 still having to meet more requirements before they become eligible for their certificates of operation.
