Weed For Warriors Project Helps Veterans Gain Access To Medical Cannabis

A donation drive has been raising funds to benefit the Weed For Warriors Project (WFWP) that helps veterans gain access to medical marijuana, according to Benzinga.

The drive, launched by Cannabist Company, continues through Veterans Day.  Customers at Cannabist dispensaries can round up their purchases or donate in $1, $5 or $10 amounts.   The point-of-sale campaign is being conducted in 12 U.S. markets—California, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

“We believe in giving back to those who have given so much for our country,” said Keri Stan, district manager, Retail, at The Cannabis Company. “This donation campaign is just one example of the many ways that we can support our veteran communities and advocate for a cause that aligns with our team’s values.”

All funds raised will go directly to the Weed for Warriors Project, which supports holistic rehabilitation for veterans through community-based projects, proactive care advocacy, cannabis education and compassion.  Founded in 2014, the WFW Project aims to allow veterans the freedom to use medical marijuana as a recognized medical alternative to harmful psychiatric drugs.  The organization advocates to the Veteran Affairs Administration on behalf of veterans.

“Weed for Warriors is dedicated to providing veterans with access to cannabis as a safe and holistic therapeutic option while working to end the stigma. We’re honored to partner with an organization that advocates so powerfully for veterans,” Stan said.

Part of the WFWP’s mission is addressing the need for accessible treatment options that are tailored to the experiences veterans have been through, including using medical cannabis to treat conditions such as PTSD.   The organization points out that veterans represent 7% of the American population, yet account for 20% of the national suicide rate.

“WWFW Project finds these numbers unacceptable”, the organization says on its web site.  “The assistance and prescription programs our veterans are provided with are not working. We believe cannabis is the answer.”
