Is it possible to use hash to make cannabutter? The short answer is: Yes, you can.
However, if you’re just venturing into making your own homemade edibles, or perhaps you just bought a new LĒVO infusion machine, like the LĒVO II, LĒVO C or the new LĒVO Lux (congratulations!), you may be wondering which parts of the plant you can use to infuse.
If you make cannabutter from hash, your butter will be even more potent. The key is to decarboxylate your hash, in an oven, before you attempt the stovetop infusion process.
Note: It’s important to understand that you cannot use hash, shatter, or other concentrates in any LĒVO home infusing machine. Because of the nature of concentrates, they can clog the machine. This poses a risk of fire or electric shock, should your ingredients reach their boiling point and catch on fire or leak inside of the machine.
Preparing to Decarb Your Hash
When preparing your hash, it is important to break it up into smaller, more uniform pieces.
You will want a surface to work where you won’t lose any hash. A large piece of parchment paper works well. The contrast of the cannabis on the parchment paper also helps ensure you have all of your plant material. Parchment paper is typically recommended over foil because the cannabis won’t burn or stick to the parchment paper as much as it would to a foil.
Decarboxylation
Now it is time to decarboxylate your hash. The decarboxylation process converts THCA, which is not psychoactive, into THC, which is psychoactive and readily absorbable by your body.
To decarb by hand, bake the hash for 25 to 30 minutes at 250°F. The key is to not burn your hash. It should dry out in the oven and change color to a more brownish appearance, but you should never smell your hash burning. Gently mix the hash, or shake the baking sheet every 5 minutes or so to ensure it bakes uniformly.
If you start to smell the hash burning, turn down your oven temperature immediately. Not all oven thermometers are accurate. Sometimes, they can be off by 20 degrees or more and they also vary by altitude.
If you haven’t used your oven before for decarboxylation, use a hand thermometer to make sure you have the most accurate reading and the temperature doesn’t get too high- ruining your product and efforts.

How Much Cannabis Should I Use for Each Stick of Butter?
¼ of an ounce (1-2 grams) of cannabis hash per stick of butter is a common combination. Hash has a higher percentage of THC in it than flower or shake, so be careful when and how you are dosing.
Note: Remember that it can be up to a few hours for edible marijuana to affect you- depending on a number of factors. So we suggest starting with a teaspoon full of butter on a slice of toast and then waiting an hour. This will help you best judge the effects of your infusion.
Working With Hash in Your Kitchen
Notably, from the steps and instructions above, decarbing and infusing by hand can be an involved and tedious process and can waste plenty of your product- unfortunately, especially with hash, it’s a hit-and-miss process.
We here at Cannabutter Digest want to help educate our readers- and of course, we’re advocates for the LĒVO home infusion machine. However, it’s important to note that the LĒVO machine is not designed to be used with concentrates of any kind and in fact, doing so could create a dangerous situation in your kitchen.
With a LĒVO home infusion machine, you can trust your botanical, herbal-infused ingredients will be consistent and potent while allowing you to focus on your recipes’ other aspects.
Results
The cannabutter that you make using this method will have a lot of THC, and there will be a strong odor of cannabis. It’s possible that this is not the best use of your hash.
Just know that it will not be as good as the butter that you can make in the LĒVO infusion machine. The infusion machine has the perfect temperature and timing to optimize the herbal, infusion process.
